چکیده

The berth allocation problem is to allocate space along the quayside to incoming ships at a container terminal in order to minimize some objective function. We consider minimization of total costs for waiting and handling as well as earliness or tardiness of completion, for all ships. We assume ships can arrive at any given time, i.e., before or after the berths become available. The resulting problem, which subsumes several previous ones, is expressed as a linear mixed 0–1 program. As it turns out to be too time-consuming for exact solution of instances of realistic size, a Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) heuristic is proposed, and compared with Multi-Start (MS), a Genetic Search algorithm (GA) and a Memetic Search algorithm (MA). VNS provides optimal solutions for all instances solved to optimality in a previous paper of the first two authors and outperforms MS, MA and GA on large instances. 2007 Elsevier B.V. An Exponential Monte-Carlo Local Search Algorithm for the Berth Allocation Problem

Over the years, the demand for maritime transportation has rapidly increased [1], [2]. This usually leads to an increasing in competition among different ports in providing efficient services. Port managers face significant challenges in efficiently utilizing the given resources to provide a cost-effective service [1]. Among many optimization and decision making problems in the port management ...

Variable neighborhood tabu search and its application to the median cycle problem

The Variable Neighborhood Tabu Search consists of a constructive phase and a series of local searches that use tabu tools. When the local search stops at a nontabu local minimum, a shake procedure starts a new local search. The local searches and the shake procedure are based on a series of standard moves. The local search consists of applying the best possible move until no such move exists. T...

A Combined Stochastic Programming and Robust Optimization Approach for Location-Routing Problem and Solving it via Variable Neighborhood Search algorithm

The location-routing problem is one of the combined problems in the area of supply chain management that simultaneously make decisions related to location of depots and routing of the vehicles. In this paper, the single-depot capacitated location-routing problem under uncertainty is presented. The problem aims to find the optimal location of a single depot and the routing of vehicles to serve th...

A Multi Objective Fibonacci Search Based Algorithm for Resource Allocation in PERT Networks

The problem we investigate deals with the optimal assignment of resources to the activities of a stochastic project network. We seek to minimize the expected cost of the project include sum of resource utilization costs and lateness costs. We assume that the work content required by the activities follows an exponential distribution. The decision variables of the model are the allocated resourc...

Optimizing the Berth Allocation Problem using a Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization

Large costs arise at a seaport container terminal from the duration of the unloading of vessels and from the time a vessel is waiting to be unloaded. The optimal allocation of vessels to berth space (Berth Allocation Problem) becomes more and more important as its solution is also input to further terminal decision problems. We compare solutions for a realistic data Berth Allocation Problem fou...
